The paint is barely dry on the new garden waste collection trucks and the Tories are already raising subscription charges in 2010/11 by 6% for non-concession garden waste bins from £35 to £37 and by 20% for concessionary charge bins from £20 to £25. So the poorer you are, you pay more in increased charges to keep your garden clean of leaves.
It gets worse for additional bin charges. Concessionary subscribers will pay 33 1/3 % more for an additional bin from £10 to £15 as opposed to non-cessionary subscribers who will only pay 20% more from £15 to £20. Where is the incentive for poorer residents to subscribe to the service?
Furthermore, as stated by my Shadow Lib Dem colleague for the Environment, Cllr Ken Howard, fly-tipping has soared since the council introduced a £26 charge for clearing large waste items.
Tories making money from cleaning up schemes does not keep our environment clean.
